There is more to it than just not knowing what floor space is available. I do not agree with the way the council are treating the museum, the exhibition main hall should be just that - an exhibition hall, not a dirty industrial workshop but a clean environment for the preservation and display of historic artefacts.
If the council are not willing to support the museum, their museum, the town's museum, I do not see why I should devote so much time and energy into what is a pretty effective fund raising exercise for them.
I have no doubt whatsoever that moving the show from the heritage centre to a smaller venue will drastically slash the support that it will get, but I still believe that we can stage a worthwhile event at a smaller venue and turn a profit for St Luke's as well as for the group that will be our hosts because we now have a reputation for putting on a good exhibition. Incidentally the intended hosts rent the building from the church but are not allowed to sublet it which is why I'm now in negotiations with the church. The church itself is not an intended beneficiary of the 2011 event other than on a purely contractual arrangement for the hire of the building.
PS - Looking even further ahead, can we hope to see Warmington back in its new improved form for the 2012 CRM Winter Olympic Exhibition?
PPS - If the ancient Maya predictions* come true there won't be a 2013. Not there won't be a CRM 2013 exhibition, just there won't be a 2013!

Well, two things,
first, appearantly, as I read from the article, it is the end of a cycle, not the world. Just ready for the start of a new cycle (so the doomsday scenario is similar to that of the year 2000 doomsday (and we all know what a soff that turned out to be)).
Secondly, appearantly the number has been misinterpreted and the actual data should be something like 2200 and a bit.
All in all Bob, I'm afraid you won't be able to weasel out of a 2013 show so easily
...so the doomsday scenario is similar to that of the year 2000 doomsday (and we all know what a soff that turned out to be.
I bought a Tilley Lamp ready for when the power went off... It's a good job it didn't because I overlooked the need to purchase some paraffin to put in the lamp!
The stress of organising the shows is becoming too much, especially as Laura and I will have a second child to look after next year, so the 2011 CRM show can go one of three ways: A) Move to a smaller venue, nearer to home, and I'll run it as I have in previous years. B) Stay as it is, somebody else runs it. C) Not take place at all.
It's not my place to speak for others, but there are other CRM members (Chris Gilbert and Nick Palette) active in organising Exhibitions- and also running into difficulties at times- i.e. Hagley was cancelled this year... Would it be an idea to pool resources so-to-speak? Nick is organising a US-outline show in May next year; maybe by working together a CRM show can be held without Bob taking on the whole thing? One slight snag may be that as Chris and Nick aren't Cheshire based, the Cheshire Railway Modellers Exhibition might actually happen in Staffordshire...

For what it's worth, I'd like to second just about everything Jim said in reply #14. Having the layouts amongst the real trains at CHC did indeed make it "special" and I got a real kick out of the small part I played in exhibiting and helping on the pay desk.
Apart from the real trains, I think the other aspect of what made the show special was having a lot of smaller layouts. Not all of them were super-perfect (I include my own). But as such somebody could go away saying "I could have a go and do that" rather than "I could never attempt something so big/super-detailled". Really that reflects a lot of the website and forum activity; try an idea out and have a bit of fun. (No, I have nothing against well-detailled and presented layouts, I like them just as much!)
I fully understand Bob's comments. To me a smaller exhibition is better than no exhibition. Unless anyone can come up with concrete proposals for something better I would go with what Jim says and suggest we all throw our support behind Bob before a major argument breaks out and we are left with no show at all.
Well, that's my opinion. Hope I haven't upset anybody, just want to recognise what we've got and focus on the good bits.
I'm not sure anyone's trying to start an argument, are they?
Hmm, my wording perhaps came over a little too strongly; I was mainly intending to agree with what others had said and pick out the positve aspects of the situation...unless you want an argument about whether we're having an argument or not

The council don't seem to have had much heart in the project since it opend the site. I felt at the time it could have been made into something good, but during it's opening year there was little advertising...you had to go inside to find out the list of forthcoming events!
But what can you say about a council that, according to a story I have heard from at least two different sources, effectively turned down having the NRM in Crewe? I was told that if they had written a cheque we could have had it here. With a certain "winner" like that, I'd have put money into it!
I find it very sad that the volunteers there have put so much effort during the last year into clearing the site, painting etc., only to have the "industrial workshop" extended in such a manner.

It'll be the four Yorkshiremen next
As has been mentioned in various threads, I think Bob's organisation of previous shows has been exemplary and if you are willing Bob, i think it wouldn't be the same without you, no matter where it is held! As has also been mentioned, the show is primarily for the enjoyment of the members and a nice profit for the charities should be seen as a nice bonus. If the CHC doesn't want that, I'm sure another deserving cause would be glad of it! If, however, it is to be a smaller venue, all the more reason to get as many of the modules together as possible this time

I have received a phone call from the Methodist Chapel Hall's committee representative today and can now confirm that the venue for the 2011 Cheshire Railway Modellers exhibition will be Hancock Hall (rear of Methodist Chapel), Crewe Road, Wheelock, Sandbach, CW11 3RT. As the event is taking place on church premises it will be on a Saturday, 22nd January 2011. Please note that there is restricted on-site parking and the main road through the village has yellow lines on it for good reason. Safe street parking can be found nearby on Mill Lane (beyond the Nags Head) or Forge Fields (over the canal bridge from the venue). For visitors travelling by public transport there are buses from Crewe, route numbers 37 and 38 operated by Arriva, the 37 goes to/from Winsford via Middlewich and the 38 runs through to/from Congleton and Macclesfield. The nearest railway stations are Sandbach (bus 37 only) and Crewe (served by both routes).
The building is a Victorian school with a medium sized main hall and two smaller classrooms, I would envisage that one of the smaller rooms would be used for the cafe leaving the other two rooms available for layouts, etc.
With a smaller event than previous years the door prices will need reviewing but whatever happens financially I propose to donate half the receipts after expenses to Wheelock Pre-School Group (the usual occupants of the building) and the other half to St Luke's Hospice in Winsford.

Its quite a few years since I have been to Wheelock but from what I remember it is a really nice village and a good venue for the show . Do I remember a good fish & chip place somewhere near the hall - is it stiil there ?
